Add in language barriers, a residency in the United States of only a couple years, and pending employment authorization documents, and this transition may seem almost impossible.

A New Life for Layla

In January 2020, Layla* came to Arizona from Ethiopia as an unaccompanied refugee minor. She didn’t know any English and had never been to school. Refugee children, like Layla, have lost or become separated from their parents and relatives due to war or persecution.

Volunteers Provide Dignity to Refugees

While travel from many countries has been suspended, Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement program received a refugee, probably the last refugee to come to Phoenix for the foreseeable future.

Twenty years ago, Dr. Zlata’s husband came to the United States (U.S.) as a refugee from Bosnia. After a lot of work, Dr. Zlata's husband helped to bring the family together to be reunited. Tragedy struck, her husband had a heart attack and died the day before the family arrived. Dr. Zlata and her children were now alone, except for the support of staff and volunteers at Catholic Charities refugee resettlement program.

More than 100 people attended the 17th Annual We Are the World appreciation dinner for refugees on Friday, June 3 at the Radisson Hotel in Phoenix. The night included several speakers from the Catholic Charities refugee community and unique entertainment that left the crowd feeling culturally rich from the diversity of the night.
