Domestic Violence

Catholic Charities has two programs to help individuals and families facing domestic violence. These programs help provide counseling, support groups, community resources. My Sisters’ Place, our confidential domestic violence shelter, serves individuals and families fleeing violence. The Pathways program is a community-based resource provider that helps victims of domestic violence in Maricopa County. This three-part team helps survivors by providing free counseling, support groups, and mobile victim advocacy.

When Jessica arrived at My Sisters’ Place earlier this year, she carried not only her own fears but also the weight of protecting her five young children.

At 37 years old, she had endured more than a year of harassment and stalking behaviors from a man staying near her in the long-term motel where her family lived. Despite her repeated refusals, he persisted—pressuring her for a relationship, watching her, and even peering into her windows, creating a terrifying environment for her and her children. It became clear that they needed a safe place to heal and start over.

Finding Safety at My Sisters’ Place

On May 31, 2025, Jessica and her children—ages 11, 9, 9, 7, and 5—came to My Sisters’ Place.

From the very first day, she was greeted with warmth and compassion. “When I first came to MSP, I was understandably nervous—I was navigating something new and unknown,” said Jessica. “The first thing I faced was a very welcoming staff. They were very understanding and caring. Also, nonjudgmental, which was a big thing for me.”

During her stay, Jessica has utilized emergency shelter, case management, and supportive services. She has worked closely with advocates to create a safety plan and access housing resources. Most importantly, she has had time to focus on healing and stability for herself and her children. “My kids and I are closer now and on our healing journey,” she shared. “Without this place, me and my kiddos wouldn’t have the chance at a new beginning that we needed. So thank you for our fresh start and for allowing me time to heal and get on my feet. The kindness and care you showed went a long way.”

Creating a New Beginning

Jessica’s journey isn’t over—she continues to work with staff as she prepares to transition to her own safe, stable home this fall. But the progress she and her children have made is already life-changing.

Since opening its doors in 1985, My Sisters’ Place has been a refuge for thousands of individuals and families fleeing abuse. As one of only two domestic violence shelters in the East Valley, it provides free services, confidential shelter, and the opportunity for survivors like Jessica to reclaim their lives.

When you support Catholic Charities and My Sisters’ Place, you make stories like Jessica’s possible. Your generosity helps provide not just shelter, but also hope, safety, and the chance for a new beginning.
