When a family faces eviction, the fear of losing their home can be overwhelming. Thanks to the generosity of Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, Catholic Charities was able to step in and provide emergency assistance to 63 families who were on the brink of homelessness.
Preventing Homelessness for Seniors and Families
The impact is both wide-reaching and deeply personal. Among those helped were nine seniors—eight of them living alone and facing eviction notices. One of those seniors is raising three grandchildren, and without this support, the entire family would have lost their home.
More than 125 children were directly impacted through this grant, spared from the trauma of homelessness. These children belong to families of every shape and story—three single mothers each raising five children, a father raising seven on his own, and dozens of other households simply trying to hold on through difficult circumstances.
Real Stories of Hope and Housing Stability
Behind every statistic is a story of hope:
- A grieving mother, who had just lost her son to suicide and been laid off from work, shared through tears that the assistance was a “Godsend” that kept her in her apartment.
- A refugee family with five children, one with disabilities, was able to stay in their apartment while the father searched for work after being laid off.
- A survivor of domestic violence was able to remain in safe housing while her new job hours slowly increased to cover her rent.
- Individuals with disabilities, waiting for delayed benefits, were able to remain stable until their cases were resolved.
How Piper Trust’s Grant Was Used
Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust’s investment of $150,000 made this possible. Half of the grant supported emergency assistance, while the other half strengthened programs such as Resident Services, Refugee Programs, Westside Head Start, and My Sisters’ Place—all vital in preventing homelessness and helping families find stability.
Lasting Impact: Housing Security and Hope
Every dollar invested is a lifeline for a neighbor in need. Together, we are not just preventing homelessness—we are offering hope, stability, and second chances.
