Those who experience homelessness are often viewed as isolated from society. Yet many, like 64-year-old veteran Gordan Henry, continue to maintain meaningful relationships and roles within the community.
Remaining Functional Despite Homelessness
Despite experiencing homelessness for five years, Gordan never stopped showing up for others. He visited his mother weekly and regularly attended church, where he served as an usher. Gordan even used the showers at local truck stops to maintain his hygiene.
To most, it would seem that Gordan’s life was entirely normal. But beneath the sense of normalcy he maintained and the kindness he showed, he was struggling.
The Quiet Reality of Instability
Because Gordan was disabled and unable to work, he had exhausted his savings and been camping in the forest, cooking meals on a propane stove. Living outside meant he was fully exposed to the elements and other people, making it impossible to establish a sense of safety.
When Gordan was connected to the VA and Catholic Charities Veterans Services, he no longer had to carry the burden of homelessness alone. Veterans Services helps veterans and their families who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness find stable housing and provides ongoing case management.
Permanent Housing Leads to Better Quality of Life
Through HUD-VASH, Gordan was able to secure an apartment in Prescott using a Section 8 voucher. HUD-VASH is a collaborative program between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the VA that provides housing vouchers and supportive services to homeless veterans.
“It feels great to have shelter, a shower and a kitchen. My mental health is better; I have less anxiety. When I was outside, I couldn’t control the people around me or stay safe,” Gordan said.
A Veteran Shares His Gratitude
Gordan credits the collaboration of the VA and Catholic Charities, his mother, his faith and his Catholic Charities case manager Kristin with helping him achieve this newfound sense of stability.
“God did this! He gave me a place. He gave me HUD-VASH, the VA, Catholic Charities and Kristin. My church family is excited and happy for me,” he said.
Stability Creates Opportunities for Service and Joy
Gordan continues to play an active role in the community and serves in a ministry that provides food and clothing to people in the park who are experiencing homelessness. Alongside others, he shares the gospel and prays with these vulnerable individuals. He is still an usher at his church and now teaches Sunday school for elementary-aged children.
Now that Gordan has safety and stability, he can focus on hobbies that enrich his life. He loves to fish—something he does most days.
“I didn’t know I could be this happy. I’m headed to the lake to fish. I’m a very fortunate man,” Gordan says with a smile.
