David* was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo to two farmers. His early years consisted of tending cows and helping his family work the land. But when war broke out in 1996, the life David once knew was gone forever.
David and his family fled to a refugee camp in Rwanda, where they remained for 15 years. When he was granted refugee status by the U.S. government and approved for resettlement to Arizona in 2011, he was separated from his family.
Refugee Resettlement Welcomes the Newcomer
Though isolated and overwhelmed by the loss of his community and culture, he remained focused on finding stability. Even though he was in a new country, he wouldn’t have to make the adjustment alone.
Once he arrived in Arizona, David was enrolled in Catholic Charities’ Refugee Resettlement program, where his case managers helped him start over. Refugee Resettlement welcomes refugees when they arrive at the airport, finds and sets up housing for them, and connects them to resources like English language classes and medical care.
Refugees Gain the Skills and Resources Needed to Thrive
David’s case managers enrolled him in English classes, taught him to navigate public transportation, supported him in earning his driver’s license, and helped him begin community college. While David attended school, the team assisted him in building a resume and applying for jobs so he could support himself and pay for his education.
As he found his footing, David began giving back to Catholic Charities, first as a volunteer interpreter. He had connected with Joanne, a member of the team who also spoke French. When Joanne asked him to help interpret for those arriving in the U.S., he was happy to assist.
A New Career Provides Stability and a Way to Give Back
Later, after earning his bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Health Sciences, he joined Catholic Charities as a full-time Case Manager, helping others adjust to life in a new country with the same compassion he had once received.
Today, David lives in Phoenix with his wife, a nursing student, and their two young sons. He has reunited with his family and continues to build a hopeful future.
