Family Preservation

Catholic Charities has multiple programs that serve to strengthen families and cultivate parenting skills so parents can create a safe environment for their children. The Arizona Department of Child Safety refers parents to our Family Connections, Nurturing Parenting, Arizona Families F.I.R.S.T (Families in Recovery Succeeding Together) and SENSE (Substance Exposed Newborn Safe Environment) programs.

Every family has a story — a journey that reflects resilience, hope and the power of support. Catholic Charities’ Family Connections program is honored to walk alongside families as they navigate challenges and work toward brighter futures.

Family Connections works hands-on with families through individualized sessions that teach problem-solving, build relationships, and provide guidance on coping with stress and emotions. Staff support parents as they gain the knowledge and resources they need to create a safe environment for their children.

Unexpected Challenges Leave a Family Struggling for Stability

Damian* was living a happy life with his two daughters, ages six and seven. But one day, the life he had pictured for his family was turned upside down.

An incident involving his daughters’ mother resulted in Damian being wrongly accused and charged with domestic violence. Damian went to jail briefly, and then the case was closed.

His time spent in jail put a strain on him both emotionally and financially. Luckily, help was about to arrive. The Department of Child Safety (DCS) soon referred him to the Family Connections program.

Family Connections Empowers and Strengthens Families

Damian began working closely with a Family Connections Consultant (FCC). Together, they identified his urgent needs and created a plan for support.

“Family Connections supported my family with assistance [that helped me] pay for my rent, provide clothes for my children, get hygiene and cleaning products, and access back-to-school resources. This helped me save a little money in my account,” said Damian.

The family’s immediate needs were met, creating a foundation of security so they could focus on rebuilding relationships and moving forward. The family also worked on strengthening daily routines, communication and parenting skills.

A Family That Works and Plays Together

“I’m now able to properly communicate with my children and other extended family members [as well as] organize and perform house chores. Sometimes [we] go out to play, ride bikes, swim or watch movies at the theater. We are now a happy family!”

Damian’s story shows what’s possible when families are given the right tools, resources and encouragement. Today, this family is not only stable but thriving, finding joy in everyday activities, creating memories and building strong connections.

At Catholic Charities, we believe in walking alongside families to fulfill their immediate and long-term needs. If you'd like to join us in helping families grow, heal and succeed together, donating items through our Amazon Wish List is a quick and easy way to show your support.
