Family Preservation

Catholic Charities has multiple programs that serve to strengthen families and cultivate parenting skills so parents can create a safe environment for their children. The Arizona Department of Child Safety refers parents to our Family Connections, Nurturing Parenting, Arizona Families F.I.R.S.T (Families in Recovery Succeeding Together) and SENSE (Substance Exposed Newborn Safe Environment) programs.

A Second Chance at Fatherhood

Although Kevin had made mistakes in his life, it didn’t change the fact that he cared deeply about his six-year-old daughter, Noelle. After getting out of jail, Kevin’s priority was reunifying with her.

Noelle’s mother was unable to care for her, resulting in her being taken into custody by the Department of Child Safety (DCS). Kevin felt stressed and desperate, worrying that he would never see Noelle again

Family Connections Empowers a Father in Need

When DCS referred Kevin to Catholic Charities’ Family Connections program, it provided more than just an avenue for getting his daughter back. It also connected him to people who truly cared about him and his success as a father.

Family Connections is a change-focused intervention that strengthens families through individualized sessions that teach problem-solving, build relationships, and offer guidance on handling emotions. It also helps parents access the supplies needed to create a safe and positive home environment for their children.

A Family Strengthened by Knowledge and Resources

Kevin started meeting with a Catholic Charities team member known as a Family Connections Consultant (FCC). The FCC provided Kevin with parenting education, including knowledge about how to empower his child and give positive discipline, positive communication and expectations.

This education allowed Kevin to get more comfortable with Noelle making her own decisions and helped him better communicate with her. His FCC also helped him meet the requirements for family reunification by providing beds, dressers, a couch, a kitchen table and fulfilling other basic needs.

Kevin worked incredibly hard to meet all the conditions for Noelle’s return. He worked two jobs, rented a house and purchased a car. He also consistently attended his Family Connections meetings.

Proper Support Helps Make Reunification Possible

His hard work paid off when he was finally reunified with Noelle. Kevin is proud to be a provider for his family and will continue to use the resources he has discovered through the program.

Kevin is grateful to Family Connections and those who supported him on the journey to reunification. “It gave me different insights and another perspective on parenting,” Kevin said.
