Catholic Charities Connect - January 2024 Edition

January 2024

Happy New Year! As we begin 2024, we are grateful and inspired by the continued support of our donors, volunteers, community partners and team members.

As we look forward to the year ahead, we have big goals to walk alongside even more of our community’s most vulnerable on their path to permanent solutions. Will you join us?

Catholic Charities is a Best Place to Work!

Catholic Charities is thrilled to be included in the Phoenix Business Journal’s Best Places to Work in Maricopa County! Members of our team celebrated in sparkly style for the Vegas-themed awards banquet, including Westside Head Start Executive Director, Yatin Dua; VP of Human Resources, Sara Wilson; VP of Philanthropy, Karen Bisko; Sr. Director of Marketing, Jean Christofferson; Sr. Programs Director Central Arizona, Nicole Gibson; Sr. Programs Director Northern Arizona, Sandi Flores; and Catholic Charities President and CEO, Paul Mulligan, pictured above left to right.

“This is Catholic Charities first year for this award, and we are so grateful to all our team members who work so hard and feel so passionate about their work,” said Paul Mulligan. “This is really all about them; they are the reason we’ve been able to help so many in need through the years.”

Funding from BHHS Legacy
Foundation Helps Change Lives

Catholic Charities is grateful to the BHHS Legacy Foundation for their instrumental partnership and foundational funding. Jerry Wissink, BHHS Legacy Foundation CEO, received a special commemorative award in appreciation of their outstanding support, which resulted in the development of the first full-service shelter in Bullhead City, the BHHS Legacy Foundation Christine Stamper Center for Help & Hope.

Now, thanks to another grant from BHHS Legacy Foundation, the Center for Help & Hope can assist even more. Last year alone, we served over 40,000 meals, provided overnight shelter for more than 7,000, and helped 148 individuals and 28 veterans find stable housing, continuing our focus on long-term solutions. Thank you, Jerry and BHHS Legacy Foundation, for helping change lives!

CARE Campus Partners with VSUW for Day of Action

Catholic Charities was honored to partner with Valley of the Sun United Way (VSUW) for their annual Day of Action.  Dozens of volunteers came together at Catholic Charities’ CARE Campus in Mesa to take part in several projects, including refreshing murals and painting a “Little Library”; helping organize and prepare for Emergency Santa; and making hand painted stockings. Some volunteers joined the Seminarians to rake and clean up the surrounding areas outside.

Thank you, VSUW volunteers, for coming together and making such a positive impact on our community!

St. John XXIII Students Make Miracles Happen

This year, sixty 6th-grade students from St. John XXIII Catholic School raised nearly $15,000 through Miracle Projects! Miracle Projects are a partnership between Catholic Charities and Catholic schools that empower students to learn about those who are less fortunate in their community, raise awareness about a cause they care about and then create an item to sell to raise funds for that cause.

This year’s donation will help hundreds of individuals in 20 different programs, including children in foster care, families escaping domestic violence, people experiencing homelessness and many others. "We are fortunate to partner with St. John XXIII and help students have a unique experience setting goals, raising funds and helping their neighbors," said Dulce Valdez, Catholic Charities Parish and Diocesan Engagement Manager. Thank you, St. John XXIII students!

The Joy of Becoming Parents

Shortly before David and Marley’s wedding, David was diagnosed with leukemia. The treatment would save his life but result in infertility. About a year into their marriage, with David in remission, the two began seriously considering adoption.

Marley learned about an info session for infant adoption through Catholic Charities’ Joining Hearts program. Joining Hearts is a full-service adoption agency that provides lifelong support to birth mothers who place their child for adoption. “What drew us to go through Catholic Charities again was how well they take care of birth moms and adoptive families. It feels like an actual community that cares about all the people involved in the process,” said Marley.
