$40,000 Donation Changes Lives

Seen left to right: Mary Permoda, Board Chair; Donors Joyce and Christopher Knight; and Paul Mulligan, President and CEO of Catholic Charities

We would like to recognize and thank Christopher and Joyce Knight for their outstanding gifts the past year. New donors to Catholic Charities, the Knights are originally from Chatham, Mass. and moved to the Valley in 2018. They have been married for 31 years and have five children and two grandchildren. One of their daughters, Eileen, is an employee at Catholic Charities in Portland, Ore. So, they know all about what we do at Catholic Charities! They are very interested in supporting our Refugee Resettlement program. Thank you, Chris and Joyce, for your generosity and for also including Catholic Charities in your estate plan. We are grateful for your commitment to our organization and look forward to working with you in the future!

Single Mom Thrives as Foster Parent

When Jennifer’s biological kids grew up, she found herself with an empty nest. She tried to fill her time as best she could, but she didn’t feel like herself when she wasn’t caring for others. For Jennifer, being able to show her kids the love they deserve and seeing them return that love is one of the greatest rewards.

After School Program Led by Jesuit Volunteer

Growing up in a small town in North Carolina created a deep sense of community for Ben Hagaman. After graduating from Boston College, he committed to a year of service as a Jesuit Volunteer (JV) and was placed at Rosewood Court, an affordable housing community developed by our affiliate, Housing for Hope, and staffed by Catholic Charities resident services, in Phoenix, Ariz.

The after-school program has become a safe space for children in the community. Read more about Ben’s dedication to community.

Youth Program Produces Legacy of Service

The teenage and tween years are tricky to navigate. Big feelings and changing bodies can cause insecurities and uncertainty. North Star Youth Partnership (NSYP), a program of Catholic Charities, gives teens the tools and education needed to successfully enter adulthood.

Tess Peterson was one such student. Her experience with NSYP started in fifth grade and continued through high school and college. “The staff, especially (Senior Program Manager) Diane DeLong, have stayed in my life as mentors for years, offering recommendations for college and jobs, answering questions about programming, and cheering me on throughout all my success professionally and personally,” said Tess.

Early Education Programs

Parents as Teachers is a national program helping parents be their child’s first and most important teacher. This free program provides home visits, child development and health screenings, support groups and connection to community resources.

Serving families in Gilbert, Mesa and Queen Creek.

Catholic Charities Westside Head Start and Early Head Start provide comprehensive, early childhood education by working with the whole family. Our programs emphasize pre-reading, language, math, cognitive skills, health, and social and emotional competence to prepare disadvantaged children for school and to maximize their potential for a bright future.

We also offer home-based services for expectant mothers and children 0-3 through weekly home visits. Serving families in the West Valley.
