Catholic Charities Celebrates
91 Years of Serving Arizonians!

Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10

This month, as we celebrate our 91st anniversary and our 92nd year of service, we reflect on child welfare worker Eileen Ward, who rallied a small group of people in the basement of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Downtown Phoenix on September 27, 1933 to launch what would become Catholic Charities Community Services.

We are grateful for the hard work and sacrifice of those like Eileen, who committed themselves to compassion and service in alignment with God’s own compassion. We are also grateful to each one of you for your support, compassion and contributions to our growth. Whether you are a donor, volunteer, team member or community partner, YOU are a part of this legacy.

Join Us for a Special Mass
and Donor Appreciation Event

Please join us as we celebrate Catholic Charities Awareness Month with a special Bishop’s Mass led by Bishop John Dolan on October 2nd at 6 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church in Scottsdale. Following the mass, you are invited to attend our inaugural Hope Society Donor Appreciation Event. The event is complimentary and open to all.

The Hope Society was established in 2024 in recognition of Catholic Charities’ dedicated donors and supporters who partner with us to advance our shared commitment to improve lives and make a meaningful impact in our communities. Members of the Hope Society play a critical role in our mission by making a yearly commitment at various levels starting at $1,933.

Hope Society members receive invitations to attend donor education events, planned giving seminars and engage in volunteer opportunities, in addition to receiving our annual calendar, donor newsletter and Impact Report.

We are honored to have you “walking alongside” us as we walk alongside those we serve, and we hope you will consider joining us for these special events. Together we are creating better lives and giving HOPE to those in our communities.

To learn more about the Hope Society or to RSVP for the October 2nd event(s), please contact Erik Stauber, Donor Development Officer, at EStauber@cc-az.org.

Parish Champions Lift Up Those in Need

Catholic Charities Prayer Champions are volunteers from different religious backgrounds who believe in the power of prayer. Each week, nearly 50 volunteers pray for the needs of those we work with and serve.

Volunteer Prayer Champion Yolanda says, “At times it is hard to read the needs of others that you do not know or have not seen. My faith has grown because even though I don't know them, I can lift up a prayer to assist them in their hardships that they are currently enduring.” Learn more here about how to become a Prayer Champion.

Flagstaff Donor Trusts
Catholic Charities with His Legacy

Since learning about Catholic Charities, Larry Kovach has been active in assisting our Homeless Outreach team. He volunteers in the local forest, provides resources to those he comes across and cleans up abandoned camps.

After careful consideration, Larry decided to leave a bequest to Catholic Charities for the benefit of Northern Arizona's unhoused community members. Bequests provide flexibility and peace of mind to donors who wish to give but may need to use some or all of their assets to take care of themselves during their lifetime.

“Of the 100+ nonprofits my team has reviewed over the years, I believe Catholic Charities is doing the most to help our unhoused, vulnerable community members. I have confidence that Catholic Charities will use this legacy gift wisely in that effort, long after I'm gone,” he states. Learn more about Larry’s incredible community impact here.

Tax Wise Charitable Planning
Strategies for Year End

There are several charitable planning strategies that can help you lower your income taxes this year. Here are some ways you can shift tax dollars to charitable dollars and support Catholic Charities:

  • IRA Charitable Distribution - Persons age 70 ½ or older can rollover up to $105,000 from their IRA to a qualified charity like ours. This may lower your income and taxes.
  • Outright Gift of an Asset - Make a gift of stock, real estate, or another asset, avoid paying capital gains tax on the transfer and receive a tax saving charitable deduction.
  • Donor Advised Fund (DAF) - Make a tax-deductible gift to a DAF, which gives you the ability to make grants to your favorite charities this year and in future years.
  • Zero Tax Gift and Sale - Make a gift of part of an investment or property you intend to sell, avoid paying capital gains tax on the sale and receive cash back.

May We Help?

We can help you create a plan that meets your needs and goals. If you would like further information on any of these planning strategies, contact Angie Trumble, CFRE, Director of Legacy Giving and Parish  Engagement at ETrumble@cc-az.org or (602) 499-6030.
