PRESCOTT, Ariz. (Feb. 24, 2009)…With unemployment and foreclosures on the rise and personal savings dwindling, Catholic Charities in Prescott is partnering with United Way and Northern Arizona Council Of Governments (NACOG) to inform Yavapai residents about potential money they can claim through the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) this tax season.

The Earned Income Tax Credit is available to individuals and families who earned less than $41,646 last year and meet necessary criteria, qualifying them for a tax credit of up to $4,824, depending on eligibility.

In addition, to raising awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit and its eligibility requirements, our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site will be open four Saturdays in March and one Saturday in April from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. To make an appointment to get your taxes filed for free, please call United Way Information and Referral at 443-5321.

“The Earned Income Tax Credit is an important tool that can provide new ways for thousands of working families to reduce debt, build their savings and move toward financial stability,” said Cathy Peterson, Catholic Charities Prescott regional director. “Working families have used this money to buy a car and open bank accounts in the past.  Given the current economy, this is a vital tool for many families trying to move out of poverty and increase their personal resources.”

To check Earned Income Tax Credit eligibility, visit http://www.irs.gov/.  For more information contact Catholic Charities at (928) 778-2531.
