He learned to how to be an example to his sons...
They gave me my self-esteem back…they taught me to be an example to my children and a guide for them.

Darrin grew up in a single-parent household of a teenage mother. She died when Darrin was just 13, leaving him to become a ward of the state. Eventually, Darrin married and had three beautiful sons, but his wife left them when the youngest was just two weeks old.

Given his difficult childhood, Darrin didn’t know how to parent, but he knew he wanted a better life for his sons. He found Catholic Charities and it changed his life.

Due to a medical disability he received while serving in the Navy, Darrin could not work and had trouble making ends meet. He did not have health insurance for himself or his children. Catholic Charities helped Darrin get his children insured, screened and immunized. But more than that, we helped him become the father he knew he could be.

Our caring staff and volunteers worked with Darrin to help him better engage with his sons and to better prepare the boys for a bright future in school. His oldest is now thriving in kindergarten and Darrin was so inspired that he plans to go back to school to further his education.
