As part of its EmpowerU program, Catholic Charities provides free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) to those with low-moderate incomes. Our IRS-trained volunteers help participants receive their maximum tax return and help them learn if they qualify for special credits, such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.

Last year, our IRS-trained volunteers completed 1,291 returns totaling more than $2.6 million in state and federal returns.

In addition to free tax return preparation, EmpowerU VITA sites also offer free electronic filing. Individuals taking advantage of the e-file program will receive their refunds in half the time compared to returns filed on paper – even faster when tax refunds are deposited directly into the client’s bank account.

Free tax preparation begins in early February and continues through April 15.
