Free tax help for those with low-moderate incomes
Catholic Charities Community Services provides free tax preparation to those with low to moderate incomes to assure they receive their maximum return, including the earned income tax credit
PHOENIX (Jan. 27, 2011) — Catholic Charities Community Services is providing free tax preparation for low- to moderate-income families and individuals throughout Central and Northern Arizona. The agency's goal is to help those in need receive their maximum return, including the federal earned income tax credit.
Families with children and household incomes under $49,000, and individuals with incomes under $13,000, may qualify for the earned income tax credit as well as other credits and deductions.
"We provide free tax preparation to help those who need it the most so that they receive every cent they deserve from their tax return," said Aaron Stiner, Paths of HOPE senior program manager for Catholic Charities. "With $5,657 as the maximum earned income tax credit, it is very important for those who think they may qualify to call us."
Joya Schmidt, now a Catholic Charities employee, volunteered as a tax preparer last year because she understands firsthand what a difference the earned income tax credit can make to those in need.
Just a few years ago, Schmidt, a single mother of two, was homeless. The first year she received her earned income tax credit, she purchased a reliable car and began establishing credit. The next year, Schmidt used her earned income tax credit to pay it off. The following two years, Schmidt saved her tax credits for a down payment on a house.
"In five years, I went from being homeless to being a homeowner," said Schmidt. "That's why it is important for those with low to moderate incomes to call us. We can help them get their maximum return. It doesn't cost a thing, but it can make a difference. It did to me."
Catholic Charities Community Services is an IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provider and is providing free tax preparation through April 15.
Catholic Charities' VITA efforts are part of Paths of HOPE, a Catholic Charities program to help motivated individuals and families to get out of poverty forever. Paths of HOPE provides a volunteer-facilitated continuum of services to help participants achieve long-term success. Catholic Charities' Paths of HOPE and VITA efforts are funded in part by the Arizona Community Foundation and the United Way.
